COVID Vaccine and the Search for Truth – Myth Busting 101

COVID Vaccine
Untitled 4

Ever since the recent rollout of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines, I’ve heard and read countless inaccurate comments about how these vaccines will do everything from rewriting your DNA to them being part of a worldwide conspiracy to implant microchips in your body.

Medicine is ALWAYS Playing the Odds

There is always a risk-benefit algorithm we go through in medicine with any treatment protocol. People don’t like to acknowledge that they can be harmed or killed by any medication, medical procedure, physical therapy session, or chiropractic adjustment, but rare events can and do happen. That’s why at the Center for Healing and Regenerative Medicine, we rely on using small injection-based procedures with relatively low risk to replace much bigger surgical procedures with much higher risk. Vaccines are no different!

“The COVID Vaccine Will Rewrite My DNA”

This is absolutely false! DNA plus an enzyme generates mRNA (messenger RNA) which generates proteins and then is destroyed. These COVID vaccines use mRNA to generate the spike protein from the SARS-CoV2 virus. Then that mRNA is destroyed. There is no way that mRNA can reprogram your DNA.

“The COVID Vaccines Have only Been Tested on Under 200 People”

False.

The Moderna trial enrolled more than 30,000 people with > 15,000 in the vaccine group and >15,000 in the placebo group. Of those people, 2.2% of each tested positive for the virus before the study began so they were excluded (a total of 675 people). On the first analysis of the data, there were 5 COVID-19 cases in the vaccine group and 90 COVID-19 cases in the placebo group. Serious adverse events were 2.0% and the same in both vaccine and placebo groups.

The Pfizer trial eventually enrolled > 43,000 participants. 21,823 were in the vaccine group and the same number made it into the placebo group. Unlike the Moderna study, there was no pre-trial testing for COVID-19. There were 8 cases of COVID-19 in the vaccine group over two months and 162 in the placebo group. Serious adverse events were 0.6% in the vaccine group and 0.5% in the placebo group.

Hence, between the two vaccine trials, more than 70,000 patients were treated. The safety profiles were excellent. The efficacy rates were high.

“There is No Data that this COVID Vaccine Will Reduce Disease Transmission nor Protect Anyone!”

Well, this may have some merit to it but the data we have suggest this is mostly false. These COVID vaccines were approved under operation Warp Speed, so there was no time to perform research on a vaccinated person’s inability to spread the disease.

However, since the first use of widespread vaccinations, they have always irradicated the diseases they targeted. This includes diseases such as smallpox, polio, diphtheria, mumps, measles, and rubella. Meaning once everyone who is vaccinated develops antibodies to COVID-19, the disease cannot spread as it dies in its new host. Hence the data we have strongly suggests that this COVID vaccine will be able to reduce disease spread. How long will we have antibody protection from the vaccine’s immune response? Not sure.

“This COVID Vaccine Only Helps Reduce Symptoms-Nothing Else”

False. These COVID vaccines are approved by the FDA for a claim that they prevent COVID-19 infection. Both approval documents clearly show that the companies meticulously defined how they determined COVID-19 infections.

In looking at the Moderna vaccine, the data presented to the FDA showed there were ultimately 11 COVID-19 cases in the vaccine group and 189 in the placebo group. There were 0 severe COVID-19 cases in the vaccine group and 30 in the control group. The approval documents say nothing about a reduction of symptoms, only that using stringent case definitions that the disease was prevented.

“Covid-19 is spread through 5G networks”

False. How did this even get started? There is no way for 5G mobile signals to transmit or reduce our defenses to it. It is biologically impossible!

The virus is spread from person to person, mainly through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or even talks. These droplets can land on objects and in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby and can be inhaled into the lungs. This is why mask wear, properly affixed over the mouth and nose along with social distancing and washing your hands often can be an effective deterrent in reducing the spread.

“Mask wear does not prevent you from becoming infected”

There is some truth to this. There have been many cases reported of people still becoming infected with the Covid-19 virus despite mask wear. Certainly the type of mask and compliance with its wear can make a difference. Additionally, it is thought that even though mask wear does not fully prevent infection, it may reduce the viral load of the mask wearer and lead to a less severe infection.

“I don’t trust this COVID vaccine, they came up with it too soon.”

The research on Corona viruses has been around for a long time, with study on this class of virus starting in the early 2000s. So when this new variant arose in late 2019 and became a worldwide pandemic, the researchers got moving. Using mRNA for vaccine development is a newer approach which expedited the process. Arguably, the production of this COVID vaccine may be the greatest scientific achievement of our lifetime.

What can we conclude?

It is indisputable that many people have died either directly from Covid-19 or indirectly from complications caused by the virus. It has wrecked the lives and livelihoods of countless people worldwide. The only feasible way that gets fixed asap is if everyone gets the COVID vaccine.

These conspiracy theories need to stop. That doesn’t mean that we can’t continue to report and analyze additional data on the safety and efficacy of these vaccines. Nor does it mean that smart people with medical and science training can’t look at that data and come to different conclusions than Pfizer or Moderna. The bottom line? These anti-COVID-19 vaccine arguments floating around are easily disprovable by the scientific data. Do the research, get past the nonsense and get vaccinated.
